Twice the Caribbean, One Destination – Interview With Cassie Schoutens

Today’s highlight of people working in the background to make a visit to St. Maarten unforgettable focuses on Cassie Schoutens, Marketing and Communication specialist at Princess Juliana International Airport.

A job inspiring in its diversity: “No two days are ever the same. I get the chance to think outside the box, come up with unique ideas, and see them come to life.” It aligns with her passion: “What drives me is creativity, finding new, out-of-the-box ways to tell stories, connect with people, and create experiences that amaze and inspire. I love bringing new ideas to the table, whether it’s through visuals, campaigns, or concepts.”

And effects of what the entire team of Princess Juliana International Airport tries to achieve together have impact. ” Yes, PJIA is one of the few airports in the world where you can watch planes land just meters above your head. But Princess Juliana is not just relevant for its iconic runway and breathtaking beachside landings, it’s also a vital connection hub for the Northeast Caribbean.”

It is a unique point that in her eyes deserves more attention globally. “St. Maarten is the perfect island to use as a hub to explore the neighboring islands. While you’re here, you also have the opportunity to visit places like St. Barths, Saba, or Anguilla, all just a short flight or boat ride away.” Regardless of the underestimation of this hub quality of the airport, she still has a weak spot for that more globally known face of the airport – Maho Beach. “There’s nothing like relaxing by the crystal-clear water while watching airplanes fly right over your head.”

In her marketing and communications job, she is helped by a long-standing experience in the workings of media. “Most people don’t know that years ago, I used to be a blogger and influencer. I worked with a few big brands – this is where my passion for marketing and communication began. I’ve always loved expressing myself creatively, whether through writing, storytelling, or creating content.” It is what makes work at the airport great fun: “What I enjoy most about my work is the creativity and variety it brings.”

Private Time Painting

Creativity also something that is Schoutens’ passion outside working hours. “Fun fact: I love to paint and find it incredibly relaxing and therapeutic.” If so, what is her most paint-worthy spot on island then? “This island is full of beautiful places, but my favorite gem is at the top of the hill across from the Natural Pool in Point Blanche. After a hike, it’s the perfect spot to rest and take in the stunning view of the sea. It’s quiet, peaceful, and ideal for a morning meditation or simply to start your day with a clear mind.”

Asked for who inspires her on island, she answers: “Clara Reyes. She has made an incredible impact on preserving and promoting St. Maarten’s culture through the arts, especially dance and theater.” Are there more sources of inspiration, role models even? “I don’t have a specific role model, but I deeply admire people who are 100% true to themselves. I respect those who fully accept who they are without trying to fit into others’ expectations. I admire individuals who follow their dreams fearlessly, who aren’t afraid to fail, and who always come back stronger after setbacks. That kind of resilience and authenticity truly inspires me.”

You could find Cassie also at D’s Beach Bar in off-time. “My favorite spot to relax on island. It’s never too crowded with tourists, making it the perfect peaceful getaway to unwind and enjoy the sea breeze.” Very possibly she would be sipping an Amaretto Sour: “My favorite drink, sweet, and refreshing. You can find it at many great spots around the island.”

Or at Port de Plaisance, during her favorite island event, the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta. “I absolutely love being out on the water and experiencing the race from a boat. The energy, the stunning views, and the mix of music and sailing create a unique atmosphere.”

Sunset Cruises For Stunning Coastlines – Visitor Tips

To invite the marketeer for a pitch – what does a visitor need to do next to Maho Beach, D’s and the Natural Pool according to Schoutens? “To truly experience the beauty of St. Maarten, you have to explore it not only by land but also by sea. A sunset boat tour is an absolute must, there’s something magical about watching the sun dip below the horizon while cruising along our stunning coastline. It’s the perfect way to take in the island’s charm from a different perspective.”

A bit of history should of course be part of the itinerary. “One historic jewel I believe every visitor should know about is Fort Louis in Marigot. It’s one of the oldest historical sites on the island, built in the late 1700s to protect the harbor warehouses from pirates.”

And then, of course, should visitors at all times sample the culinary qualities of the destination at more restaurants than one. “I have a few great spots I always recommend. If you’re heading to the beach, Bikini Beach and Kontiki at Orient Bay Beach are must-visits, especially for the sushi pizza at Kontiki. Loterie Farm is another favorite, not just for the amazing food but also for the breathtaking view nestled in the landscape of Saint Martin. You can find the best burgers at Tap and Still. For sushi lovers, Bamboo never disappoints. And for a more local and authentic experience, I absolutely love the lolos in Grand Case, simple, delicious, and full of flavor!” For shopping, she recommends St. Maarten Nectar. “I love their products, they’re all created in their own lab and locally made, which makes them really special.”

Island Qualities

The variety of locations she enthusiastically advises according to her portray exactly the very essence of the island. “One of the core qualities of St. Maarten / St. Martin is that it offers twice the Caribbean in one destination. The island is uniquely split between the French and Dutch sides, each with its own charm. On the French side, you’ll find a refined, laid-back atmosphere and world-class dining. On the Dutch side, you’ll experience a vibrant, energetic vibe with lively beaches, duty-free shopping, and an exciting nightlife, especially in Simpson Bay, often referred to as the Las Vegas of the Caribbean. Together, they offer the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure, making the island truly unforgettable.”

But there are more qualities to the island, sometimes not seen at a glance and with a deeper layer. “What I love most about St. Maarten is that it’s a safe and welcoming place for children. I cherish how my daughter makes new friends at the beach and gets to enjoy playing there after school. I also truly appreciate the people of St. Maarten, it feels like a close-knit community where everyone looks out for each other and is always willing to lend a helping hand.”

Guilty Pleasures: Country Music & Horror Movies

What are personal touches, hidden sides left unsaid in this interview according to Cassie? She laughs: ” I’m a huge fan of horror movies, the scarier, the better!” Another one: “Since I was a little girl, country music has been my guilty pleasure; I still know all the lyrics to some old-school classics.”

Asked for one central island memory to close off with, the power of creation surfaces once more. ” I would say the beauty lies in creating new memories together. Every day brings something new and memorable, and that’s what makes our time on St. Maarten so special.”
