Not having had borders for 400 years, a highly diverse landscape and being one of the safest destinations in the Caribbean, allows you to travel wherever you want – and all that St Maarten / St Martin offers is well within reach well within an hour travel.
So for those who seek to have their own itinerary and set out their own excursion, St Maarten / St Martin has plenty to discover on your own!
For those explorers looking for an original track over the island, some suggestions:
• Take a hike! The EPIC foundation as well as the heritage museum have laid out various walking routes through St. Maarten / Saint Martin’s nature.
• More recently, the Bethechange Foundation created a walking route along Philipsburg murals created by local artists.
• The relatively new Amuseum Naturalis of the Fruits de Mer foundation gives a great insight of St. Maarten history and nature, including exhibitions.
• The same for the Heritage Museum in Philipsburg!
• Visit the old salt mill, a remnant of Sint Maarten’s salt economy of once.
• Stroll or drive up Pic Paradis, the highest peak of the island. A great way to end your hike is to take a cocktail at Loterie Farm.
• Pick your private beach at Lovers Beach or Happy Bay!
• Spend a day on an uninhabited island like Tintamarre
• Or simply take expert advice by going where the locals go!
