Oceans, Orient Bay & Sensational Sailing – Interview with Chantal Te Koppele (Private Yacht Charter)

For todays interview with a person behind the scenes of the St. Maarten hospitality and trade industries meet Chantal, the bright-smiled ginger behind the helm of Private Yacht Charter in sunny St. Maarten.

Originally from the Netherlands, she made the bold move to the Caribbean over a decade ago and never looked back. “What began as an island adventure has become my way of life.”

What should people know about Private Yacht Charter? “At Private Yacht Charter, we offer both day trips and week-long charters, a rare combo on the island. Our fleet is made up entirely of eco-friendly sailing catamarans. We believe in enjoying the sea responsibly and sustainably. One of the newest additions to our offerings is our shared charters, though we prefer to call them semi-private. We limit the number of guests to just 12 per trip, so you still enjoy the comfort, luxury, and personalized service we’re known for but without the crowds. It’s the perfect in-between for solo travelers, couples, or small groups who want a premium experience without booking a private boat”.

Today, St. Maarten is home and the ocean is her everyday view. As General Manager of Private Yacht Charter, she brings unmatched energy, a deep love for the sea, and a commitment to creating unforgettable experiences for every guest who steps aboard. Known for her positivity and hands-on approach, ” I try to ensure every charter is filled with good vibes, great service, and just the right amount of barefoot luxury.” Whether she’s organizing a dreamy sunset sail or greeting guests with her signature smile, she’s the heart and soul of the operation.

What Makes Her Tick

She does not have a specific role model, but finds inspiration in many different places and people, depending on the moment or challenge. “I focus on growing through my own experiences, learning from those around me, always striving to become a better version of myself. It’s more about personal development than following in someone else’s footsteps.”

What is it most people don’t know about this extravert lady? “Well, before running charters on St Maarten, I was actually planning corporate events in both the Netherlands and Australia and working with major brands and venues.” She adds smilingly: “But here’s the real surprise: despite working in the lively world of hospitality and events, I’m secretly a bit of a grandma at heart, I’m usually tucked into bed by 9pm. That said, I’m also the kind of person who happily wakes up at 5am for a sunrise hike with my dog. Nature is my reset button, and hiking is my favorite way to start the day.”

She has the luxury that work is her passion. “What I love most about my work is creating unforgettable moments for our guests. There’s truly no better feeling than knowing you’ve helped make someone’s vacation, or even their year, extra special. It’s amazing when guests tell me they still think about their charter experience, even years later. I especially enjoy seeing returning guests and catching up on their lives, how their kids have grown, graduated, or moved abroad. “The ties created are personal. “That personal connection means a lot to me.

I really enjoy the variety of the job too. Every day is different. One moment I’m handling bookings and emails, then catching up on accounting, and next I’m diving into marketing and (web) design. It keeps things interesting, and I never feel stuck in a routine. And of course, one of the best perks is being able to take the boats out every now and then for a personal trip. That’s hard to beat!”

Essence of the Island

What she loves most about St. Maarten is that the island is not just one strength, but a mix of so many elements. “The laid-back island lifestyle, the warmth of the people, the beautiful beaches and hiking trails, and the freedom from the stress and pressure you often find in bigger cities or countries. There’s a unique sense of freedom here. You can truly be yourself, follow your own path, and still feel accepted. I also love the quirky charm of the island being shared by two countries. It’s not always perfect, but that mix of cultures, the organized chaos, and the easygoing vibe is what makes it feel like home.

She is surprised that some visitors do not always realize how St Maarten is so much more than its beautiful beaches. “Yes, we’re known for turquoise waters and white sand, but the island has so much more. Lush hiking trails, rich history, vibrant local culture, and an incredibly diverse, welcoming community. And not to forget, a food lovers paradise. We are called the culinary capital of the Caribbean for a reason.”

Chantals Personal St. Maarten / St. Martin

“I have so many beautiful memories here.  One that really stands out is the first time I showed my parents around St. Maarten and realizing they (almost) love the island as much as I do. That moment meant so much, as it felt like they truly understood why I chose to build my life here, and in a way, they became part of it too. Other memories that hold a special place in my heart include dancing in the Carnival parade for the first time, camping on Tintamarre with close friends, and joining the annual relay race which always brings out this amazing sense of community and island spirit.”

Asked for her favorite spot on island, she is in doubt of spoiling her own well-kept secrets. “Okay… I’ll admit it, even though I probably shouldn’t. It’s Petites Cayes (or how we call it: Wilderness). It’s a bit of a hidden gem, tucked away and only accessible with a nice hike. No beach bars, no crowds, just untouched nature and total peace. It’s my go-to spot when I need to disconnect and reset. So if you do go there too, leave only footprints and don’t forget your swimwear for a nice little swim.”

Her favorite beach is Le Galion. “It’s a bit more of a local favorite, which is probably why I love it so much. There are no beach bars or crowds, just bring your own cooler, maybe a little BBQ, and you’re all set.” The beach will further grow on you during the day. “Depending on the day, you might catch some waves for surfing or kite surfing, but close to the shore it’s calm, shallow, and also great for families with kids. I personally love going there in the late afternoon with friends for a laid-back sunset BBQ, or during the week when it’s quiet. Just me, a book, and the sound of the sea.”

Orient Bay For Dinner, Grand Case For Drinks

The extravert lady needs to think a while when asked what island restaurant  to recommend. “There are so many amazing restaurants on the island, it’s hard to choose just one. But if I had to recommend a favorite it would be L’Atelier in Orient Bay. I love the atmosphere of the Orient Bay restaurant square. It has such a unique charm compared to the rest of the island, with live music and a little local market adding to the vibe.”

For her, L’Atelier stands out for its consistently excellent food and top-notch service. “The owner is always present, passionately explaining the menu and making sure every guest feels welcome. You can really tell he loves what he does. The staff is fun, the cocktails are fantastic, and if you’re a meat lover, this place is a must!

That said, she also loves “Villa Hibiscus for fine dining, Ocean 82 for its stunning oceanfront views and Blue Martini for a laid-back evening with great energy. Honestly, there’s something for every mood and taste here in St. Martin.”

For her favorite island drink, she suggests to move over 5 minutes to Grand Case. “Without a doubt an espresso martini. This girl loves her coffee, so give me caffeine with a kick and I’m all in! When I’m craving one, I head straight to Blue Martini in Grand Case.”

Visitor Advice: On Cosmopolitan Culture, Catamarans & Castle-like Fortresses

In her eyes, St. Maarten is not a hard sell to visitors because of its multi-cultural tissue. “What truly defines St. Maarten / St. Martin is its incredible cultural diversity and how harmoniously it all comes together. It’s rare to find a place where so many nationalities, languages, and traditions blend so naturally. Whether you’re enjoying French pastries in the morning, Creole cuisine for lunch, or Dutch-inspired festivities in the evening, you’re constantly surrounded by a vibrant mix of cultures.”

But what stands out even more to her is the welcoming spirit of the people. No matter where you’re from, you’re greeted with warmth and genuine friendliness. “That sense of openness and community, paired with the island’s natural beauty, makes St. Maarten / St. Martin not just a beautiful destination, but a place that feels like home. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or coming back again and again.”

If asked what St. Maarten activity should be part and parcel of any visit to St. Maarten, her passion for work surfaces once again. “One activity that absolutely should be part of any visit to St. Maarten is a day out on the waterWhether it’s a sailing trip, a catamaran charter, or a snorkeling adventure. With Private Yacht Charter you combine them all. Seeing the island from the sea gives you a whole new perspective, and the views are just breathtaking. Sail along the coastline, stop at secluded beaches, snorkel in crystal-clear waters, and maybe even spot some turtles or dolphins along the way. Add in some great music, a fresh rum punch in hand, and the ocean breeze. It’s the kind of day that turns into a lifelong memory.”

No surprise for Chantal, uninhabited islands are recommended hideouts of the Caribbean getaway. “I always really enjoy Pinel Island, and I truly think it should be on every visitor’s must-see list. It is perfect for a relaxing beach day, but what many people miss is that Pinel is more than just its main beach. There is a beautiful walking trail that takes you to a quiet remote beach on the other side, or up to a scenic viewpoint with stunning views over St. Maarten and Tintamarre. You are likely to see many iguanas, possibly spot some land turtles and you will probably see sugar birds flying around.  Lunch at Karibuni is always a highlight. Great food, amazing service, and your toes in the sand… it doesn’t get better than that.”

When it comes to diving into local culture and history, one spot she always recommends to visitors is Fort Louis in Marigot. “It’s not just a beautiful place to visit, it’s a true historic gem that gives you a glimpse into the island’s colonial past. The old stone walls, the cannons still in place, and the quiet stories the fort holds. It’s a peaceful reminder of how rich and complex St. Martin’s history is, blending French, Dutch, African, and Caribbean influences. Whether you’re a history lover or just want a great view with meaning, it’s definitely worth the climb.”

French Side Food, Dutch Side Adrenaline

For her favorite annual event, return to the Dutch side in March. She laughs: ” It probably won’t come as a surprise, as I work in the marine industry, but my favorite annual event on island is the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta. It’s something the island can truly be proud of, being the largest warm-water regatta in the world!”

“The Diam class is my favorite. A few years ago, our company founder, Pierre Altier, played a key role in establishing this class, and it’s been growing in popularity ever since. They may be small, but these trimarans deliver incredible speed. Watching them in action is absolutely thrilling.”

But it is not just the sailing aspect that appeals te Koppele. “What I love most is that the event is not just for sailors. The entire island comes alive during regatta week. After each day of racing, the Regatta Village becomes the heart of the action with live music, amazing local food, and headline performances by both local and international artists. There are events and parties happening all over the island, so whether you’re into sailing or not, there’s something for everyone. Even just watching the boats race by from the beach or hopping on a spectator boat makes for a truly unforgettable experience. It’s that perfect mix of world-class sport and Caribbean fun. Serious fun, as they like to say.”

In her eyes, it is the many volunteers fostering the next generation of St. Maarten sailors that need more attention. “Rather than highlighting an individual, I’d like to shine a light on a local organization that truly deserves more recognition: the Kidz at Sea Foundation. Their dedication to our community and the marine industry is incredibly inspiring. They’ve created meaningful opportunities for local youth, especially those from families with limited financial means, by offering hands-on training and certifications that open doors to real careers in the maritime world. Beyond that, they’re actively involved in educating the community and protecting our environment, organizing regular coastal and underwater cleanups that have a real, visible impact. Their work not only empowers the next generation but also helps preserve the beauty and future of St. Maarten, and that’s something worth celebrating.”

Personal Holiday Hikes

Sailor Chantal is not made for hotel rooms in her own private time either. “My nature is one of skipping big hotels and heading straight for the water. I’d take one of our boats for an overnight trip. St. Barths or Anguilla are amazing, but honestly, even just one night anchored at Tintamarre is enough to bring me to my happy place. There’s nothing like waking up to the sound of the sea and having the island all to yourself. If I had to stay on land, I’d choose Karibuni Boutique Hotel. It’s intimate, peaceful, and tucked away. Just the kind of place to fully unwind without the crowds. Quiet luxury, local charm, and total relaxation”.

Another favorite spot to relax on island is Loterie Farm, especially on a quiet day with no cruise ships in.  “I love starting with a peaceful hike through the lush trails, then settling down by the pool with a good book. It’s the perfect place to unwind, occasionally dip in the pool to cool off, sip on drinks, enjoy some yummy tapas, and just fully disconnect. If you haven’t tried it yet, the zipline experience at Loterie Farm is a must! Personally, I think it is a much nicer experience than the other zipline options on the island.”

For a moment of shopping, she would select The Art Box Gallery. “It’s a true hidden gem for anyone who appreciates Caribbean art and handmade crafts. The owner, Zdenka, curates a beautiful mix of museum-quality paintings, handcrafted jewelry, sculptures, and ceramics, all by talented local artists.”
