A “Family Fam Trip” – Visitor Highlight: Luxury Travel Advisor Tamara Smith
In today’s portrait of island guests, the spotlight is on Tamara Smith, a luxury travel advisor from the United States. She recently spent a full week on St. Maarten / St. Martin on a family retreat, always on the lookout for recommendations and tips for her loyal clients as well as future ones. Smith explains: “What drives me is helping people see the world differently — with heart, intention, and a touch of luxury. Travel isn’t just about going somewhere new, it’s about creating memories that stay with you forever.”
She also enjoys a large online following of friends and clients, inspired by the exclusive journeys she takes. “I started by simply sharing my own travels, and it grew into something so much bigger — now I get to lead others to the same destinations that stole my heart.”
As if balancing two careers and raising young children weren’t enough, she also devotes time to a fourth passion: “Most people don’t know that I’m also a pediatric occupational therapist. I’ve always loved helping children and families, and in many ways, my work in travel is another extension of that — healing through experience, connection, and joy.”
Her primary profession, however, remains designing the perfect holiday for her clients. For Smith, “holidays” often mean bleisure — a mix of business and leisure — with an eye toward creating unforgettable memories. “The best part of my work is seeing my clients light up when they arrive at a destination I’ve curated for them. I get to blend logistics, luxury, and creativity — but the true reward is always in the smiles, laughter, and ‘wow’ moments.” Her portfolio is global: “I specialize in luxury group travel to Bali, Thailand, and the Caribbean, and I love creating trips that feel both unique and personal.”
St. Maarten from a Luxury Advisor’s Viewpoint
Even before her most recent visit, Smith frequently recommended St. Maarten / St. Martin to her clients. What makes the island so attractive? “Its energy and duality. The warmth you feel the moment you arrive is incredible — welcoming, vibrant, and alive. And the island’s dual character is unique: the Dutch and French sides each offer something special, yet they blend together beautifully. That mix of cultures, flavors, and traditions makes St. Maarten one-of-a-kind.”
For families, she says, the island is a hidden gem: “St. Maarten is so much more than beaches. It’s a very family-friendly destination, with plenty of activities for kids. Spots like the Rusty Parrot Pirate Park, the Bird Park, and Waterworks at Walter Plantz Square are just a few examples of how the island caters to families in fun and unexpected ways. As a pediatric occupational therapist, I especially notice how welcoming the island is to children.”
The island’s cultural mix is also reflected in its food scene. “I enjoyed some incredible restaurants — Buccaneer Beach Bar, Dutch Blonde Beach Bar, Tortuga Beach Café, and The Pier — each with its own flavors and atmosphere. For quick, authentic local cuisine, Fritay is a favorite. I also love Palapa Bar and Grill. Being Haitian myself, I have a special love for Villa Royale and Fritay, which both highlight Haitian-inspired and fusion dishes — it feels like a beautiful taste of home while traveling.”
She also highlights the role of local artists: “Local artists and craftspeople keep the culture alive and tell the island’s story in authentic ways. They deserve more recognition as part of what makes a destination truly special.”
And if there’s one event that captures the island’s essence, it’s Carnival: “The music, the costumes, the community energy — it’s a celebration of culture and joy that’s truly unforgettable.”
Recommended Routes
Smith’s must-see list starts in the capital: “Philipsburg is such an important part of the island’s history. From its colonial architecture to the iconic Courthouse and vibrant Front Street, it’s where you can really feel the story of St. Maarten come alive.”
She also recommends exploring the island by sea: “A boat tour with Aqua Mania Adventures is a must. Their trip to Anguilla was unforgettable — the service, the scenery, the whole experience was absolutely top-notch. It’s one of the best ways to take in the beauty of the region.”
When it comes to beaches, her first pick is clear: “Mullet Bay Beach — it’s lively, beautiful, and has that perfect mix of locals and visitors. The water is stunning, and it always feels like the heart of the island. This last trip was actually my third time visiting St. Maarten, and every time I fall in love with Mullet Bay all over again.” She also treasures Baie Rouge (Red Bay): “At sunset, Baie Rouge feels calm and peaceful — like time slows down.”
Her favorite area, though, is Simpson Bay: “It’s lively, vibrant, and centrally located, with everything within walking distance. The food is amazing, the nightlife is fun, and there’s so much to explore. I also love stopping by Toppers Rum Distillery for a tasting— it’s a unique experience that captures the flavor of the island. I always bring home bottles as souvenirs — it’s more than just shopping, it’s a way to stay connected to St. Maarten’s spirit.”
For this trip, Simpson Bay was also home: “I love the Simpson Bay Resort & Spa, one of my top recommendations for clients. The hospitality is excellent, the villas are spacious with incredible views, and the on-site restaurants are wonderful. My favorite is Juliette’s Bistro — it always delivers a memorable dining experience.”
She adds: “I had stayed here before, but this time, with our growing family, Simpson Bay Resort was a perfect fit. With short walks to multiple beaches, great restaurants, and a variety of activities, it suited this first ‘family fam trip’ perfectly.”
Private & Personal Places
Smith has explored many corners of the island, but one memory stands out: “My fondest memory was celebrating my birthday at Villa Corrine on Dawn Beach. The villa was perfect — we could walk straight onto the beach, and it also had a pool overlooking the ocean. Waking up to that view every morning felt like a dream come true.”
When it’s time for a sunset cocktail, she favors the Rusty Parrot: “The bartender was so attentive and hospitable that the whole experience stood out. Warm service matters just as much as the drink, and this spot has both.”
Does she share all her secrets with clients? She laughs: “There are a few spots I keep to myself, but for the sake of sharing, one of my favorites is a tucked-away stretch of sand near Happy Bay. It feels untouched and peaceful — my place to recharge and feel like the island is mine for a moment.”
In those quiet moments, inspiration is always close by: “My late daughter, Cairo, is my greatest role model. Her resilience, her ability to overcome obstacles, and her determination to exceed expectations taught me the true meaning of hard work and the importance of always showing up. She continues to travel with me in spirit – guiding me, inspiring me, and reminding me to keep going with strength and grace wherever I am in the world.”
