Fort Louis on French side St. Martin

DRIFT: ST. MARTIN’S HISTORY COMES ALIVE AT FORT LOUIS

A GLIMPSE OF THE PAST

One place to recapture the fascinating story with some of the most influential figures in European History is Fort Louis.

Overseeing the town of Marigot,  Fort Louis was built in 1789 by governor Jean-Sébastien de Durat to protect the wealthy stores which lined the waterfront.

In the distance one can  see Marigot Bay, Simpson Bay Lagoon, the Lowlands, Nettle Bay and Anguilla.

In recent years the fort has been fitted with bilingual explanatory signs in English and French were installed for visitors.
