Sint Maarten Yacht club, sailing for less-abled people, sailability program

SOUALIGA NEWSDAY: THE SINT MAARTEN YACHT CLUB LAUNCHES A SAILING PROGRAM FOR DIFFERENTLY ABLED YOUTH AND ADULTS

SINT MAARTEN YACHT CLUB SAILABILITY PROGRAM

The Sint Maarten Yacht Club launches a program for differently abled youths and adults called the sailability program. The goal of the SMYC with this program is to make sailing more accessible to the less-abled community. They stated that practicing sports is very important despite a psychical or mental disability.

With a special boat the SMYC has, called RS Venture Connects, this program can be made possible because the boat is specially built for making sailing possible for the specific group targeted. For example, the boat is unable to capsize so it is safe for everyone. The program is made possible because of the funding of the government of the Netherlands via their Sint Maarten trust fund.

The classes are now planned for September, and in the upcoming months leading to September the SMYC instructors will meet the students and their parents. This way everybody can grow fully comfortable in the situation. The program not only benefits the students, but the instructors will also learn more by the WYCCF about special needs and how to approach the students.

Representatives of the Sister Basilia Center and the SMYC stated that they are very excited for the program to be launched.
