Great Salt Pond Birding Platform
Designated as one of St. Maartens International Birding Areas, since 2023 the Great Salt Pond has its own floating birding platform. It allows birdwatchers and nature lovers to spot Brown Pelicans, Ospreys, Great Egrets and more species visiting the salty waters of the pond. Explanatory signage by project leader Nature Foundation and Windward Roads tells about the history of the Great Salt Pond. For specialized bird tours, the Nature Foundation can be contacted.
The platform is freely accessible from the Emancipation Statue Roundabout at the eastern end of Walter J Nisbeth / Pondfill Road, and is within ten minute walking distance of most of Philipsburg. A sizeable parking lot is close by.
