MARIGOT

Marigot, Saint Martin: Capital of the French Side

Marigot, the capital of the French side of Saint Martin, serves as the administrative, cultural, and commercial heart of the French side. Situated along a picturesque bay, it combines the charm of Caribbean waterfront life with the sophistication of French Caribbean-influenced architecture and cuisine. This town has a very French European feel to it as it is from the French Collectivity, with a Caribbean twist. Established as a residential area in 1703, it was named that way due to its swampy area.

History

Marigot traces its origins to the 18th century as a modest fishing village, gradually developing into the political and commercial hub of French Saint Martin as it took over from French Quarter (Quartier d’ Orleans) The town grew around its natural harbor, which facilitated trade between the Caribbean islands (including the southern or “Dutch side” of the island and mainland France.

Today, the town reflects a blend of colonial heritage and contemporary Caribbean culture, with colorful Creole-style buildings lining its streets.
