A Global Girl At Guana Bay – Interview with Nadia Ruhomutally (Villa Amalia)
Since five years, Nadia Ruhomutally has been the manager of Villa Amalia in Guana Bay. A perfect reason to interview her for our series of portraits that highlight the people making tourism thrive on the island.
She was born and raised on an island, but one far from the Caribbean: Mauritius. “I met my husband while studying in Lyon, France, and we later got married. In 2020, we moved back to his homeland, Sint Maarten, where we now live.”
All-inclusive Villa Amalia features a pickleball court, a pool, pool and pingpong ball tables and a spa. It overlooks Guana Bay Beach to which it has beach access, just a short drive from capital Philipsburg. It’s designed for groups or families who want space and privacy, with staff available to handle chores and basic needs. In a luxury property like Villa Amalia, that means two chefs, daily housekeeping and butler services.
Nadia came to the role with a skill set perfectly suited to manage a large luxury estate. “I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Communication and Marketing, and later completed a Master’s degree in Business Administration. I’m a bubbly person who is always looking for new challenges and opportunities to grow.”
These experiences make her a globally versed hospitality expert. “I’ve had the opportunity to live in several countries, including France, the United Kingdom, Greece, and now Sint Maarten. These experiences have shaped my perspective and allowed me to embrace different cultures and ways of life.”.
Nadia sees her work as fun: “I love meeting new guests from around the world and hosting them, greeting them.”
Island Perspectives
Clients often ask her what to do on the island. “I consider boat trips a must. They are fun and a great way to experience the destination.” She usually stops at at least two locations. “I love the Mullet Bay and the Maho area; the touristy vibe just feels like vacation.” On the French side: “Baie Rouge is great. It is so peaceful, wild, and calm all at the same time.”
She also recommends spending a day in nearby Philipsburg for leisure, shopping, and historical exploration. Nature and history, especially architectural history, are her personal passions. “I’m a big animal lover and a beach lover, which is something you can’t take away from an island girl. I’ve worked in many fields: sales, marketing, events, customer service, and now property management, but I’ve always been passionate about architecture and interior design. My father taught me a lot when I was younger. He was very handy and remains a guiding light.”
Dinearound After Working Days
But the wide choice of dining options is an island forte, and she enjoys them outside working hours. “For dinner, Alina and Isola are my two favorites.” Bars are on her radar too, though she doesn’t drink much. “Coconut water is the best. It’s accessible all around the island! If I had to recommend one spot, it’s Kalatua at Mullet Bay; my favorite place to relax.”
Nadia also loves the variety of events the island offers. “Every month there’s usually a festival or event. The Mardis de Grand Case are my favorite: we get to discover so many local vendors in a vibrant atmosphere.” She enjoys going with friends: “As global as I might be, meeting some of my best friends on the island is my best experience here.”
