THE DAILY HERALD: THE SIGNIFICANCE OF LITTLE BAY POND
LITTLE BAY POND
Little Bay Pond, also known as Welgelegen Pond, has played a very important role in the history of St Maarten. The pond had multiple uses, such as a food and water reserve. At a certain point in time, it helped survive 91 slaves and the big part of the St Maarten population was dependent of the pond for survival.
As of today, it still serves important use because it has an Important Bird Area (IBA). The IBA is bordering Little Bay, and is next to Great Bay in Philipsburg. You can find aquatic grasses and red, black and white mangrove trees. Furthermore, the area also serves as a breeding place for some species.
