Sailing, Sports & St. Maarten – Interview with Krispijn Teunissen (St. Maarten Heineken Regatta)
Today’s highlighted person behind the scenes of your visit to St. Maarten / St. Martin is Krispijn Teunissen. Teunissen is Regatta Director of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta, the annual landmark Caribbean sailing event in the first week of March.
The St. Maarten Yacht Club Regatta Foundation is a non-profit organization. Krispijn: “The St. Maarten Heineken Regatta is an incredible event that brings together people from around the world through sailing, music, and culture. Although the event is widely known as the ‘Heineken Regatta,’ it’s important to clarify that Heineken is the title sponsor, not the overall organizer, Krispijn explains. “The event is owned and operated by the St. Maarten Yacht Club Regatta Foundation. Heineken and their brand managers on the island play a key role in shaping the vibrant onshore experience – the ‘Serious Fun’ side of the event. But when it comes to organizing the sailing itself – the races, logistics, safety, and race management – that’s entirely the responsibility of our foundation. At its core, the Regatta is a world-class sailing event, and that’s what drives everything we do. Many artists, vendors, and companies involved assume there’s a big budget behind it, but like many non-profits, we rely on donations and sponsorships. That makes things challenging, but also very dynamic – and never dull!”
Organizing the regatta is not just work for him, but a driving force. “What I love about my work is the thrill of building toward a massive event that brings joy to so many people. It’s full of challenges, but I live by the motto: almost nothing is a dead end – there’s always a way forward… I’m a triathlete, and what drives me is working with enthusiastic people to create something meaningful and memorable – something participants can look back on and think, “Wow, I was a part of that.””
Hidden Sides of Krispijn
Having previously worked at a training and events agency in the Netherlands, Krispijn took over the helm of the prestigious sailing event in 2024. In addition to his role with the Regatta, he co-organizes events like the Sint Maarten Marathon, the Sint Maarten’s Day Around the Island Relay Run, and the Half Marathon Around the Lagoon.
But there is more fascinating sides to his life story, long before he, his wife and children moved to St. Maarten. “Most people don’t know I worked in forensic psychiatry in the Netherlands for 20 years. On a completely different note, I’ve twice represented “Team NL” at the European and World Championships in Olympic-distance triathlon.”
He got married in Guana Bay in 2006. “Back when, there was still a jazz club there. It was truly magical.”
Sports is not just a hobby alone. “I invested in a professional timing system to support the smooth running of athletic, swimming, and triathlon events across Sint Maarten, Saba, Nevis, and other neighboring islands. Behind the scenes, I also assist my wife with her company, Perpetual Plastics, which she founded a year ago.”
Off the Beaten Sports Track
Where does the director spend his time when not in an adrenaline rush? “I have several favorite hidden spots – especially places that haven’t been developed. The area beyond Back Bay toward Guana Bay is stunning. I also love many places on the French side, where nature still dominates and hotels and villas haven’t taken over – like the beautiful La Belle Créole area.”
The same motivation applies when asked for his favorite beaches. “Happy Bay and Plum Bay are my top choices. Why? Because there are no beach chairs – just unspoiled nature and peace. Little Bay is another one of my favorites – the water is clean and calm, perfect for swimming. Petit Plage is another gem: peaceful, beautiful, and ideal for a quiet swim.”
Running around the lagoon early in the morning is his favorite way to unwind, as there is little traffic and the morning brings gorgeous views over the Lowlands. He passes by one of his favorite landmarks along the route. “Trou de David is a beautiful natural site worth visiting. Historically speaking, much has unfortunately been bulldozered, but Emilio Wilson Park also remains significant – by that, I mean the actual park, not the cable car.”
He sometimes worries about these natural spots, and what they will look like when his four children reach his age. “There are still stunning, untouched areas that need protection. Mullet Bay, for instance, used to be one of the few beaches you could visit without rows of beach chairs. The hills are full of amazing trails for running and hiking —perfect to escape the hustle and reconnect with nature. Let’s keep it like that”.
Visitor Tips from an Energetic Insider
In a 2024 economic impact study showed the Heineken Regatta to be a valuable destination marketing machine. What makes St. Maarten unique to visitors in the eyes of the director of this messaging behemoth? “The fact that two countries can coexist on one small island is truly unique. There’s a lot of mutual support, whether in sports or everyday life – we really share this space together. Also, the incredible diversity of cultures on such a small island. It makes life here colorful and inspiring.”
Visitors should always enjoy some active tours. “Cycling or e-biking around the island gets you moving, allows you to reach places no tour bus will take you, and keeps you outdoors. It’s a win-win.”
Shiv Shakti is his recommended restaurant on island. “It creates delicious Indian food at a very fair price. Absolutely worth it. I’m not much of a bar person, but I do love a fresh juice. Exodus Juice Bar in Marigot is my go-to – amazing quality!”
Grand Case is his favorite area for a cross-border “staycation”. “Great vibe, delicious food, and a relaxing atmosphere.”
Standing on Sportive Shoulders
Who inspires Krispijn on his journeys of sporting events? “Susy Maidwell of Trisport absolutely deserves more recognition. For years, She has encouraged and has made running and triathlon events beginner- and pro-friendly. She’s always ready to help in any way she can.”
There’s other people that Teunissen gets energy from “across the pond” too. “A good friend of mine in the Netherlands, Martijn, also inspires me. He’s passionate about sports – not just to win, but to be the best version of himself. I share that mindset. Winning isn’t always the goal – enjoying the process is what matters most.”
