Freegan Food Foundation Faces Major Funding Loss, Urges Community Support

The Freegan Food Foundation, a key player in the fight against food insecurity on St. Maarten, has announced the loss of a long-time sponsor due to rising operational costs caused by new U.S. trade tariffs. This setback threatens the future of its Freegan Food Market and coaching programs, which support hundreds of families each month with groceries and life-skills training. “We are actively reaching out to new partners and donors,” said Managing Director Joost de Jong, “but we’re unsure if we can sustain all programs into 2026.”

The foundation’s client-choice model provides dignity, choice, and hope to struggling families, helping them build independence and stability. Without urgent support, many of these services may soon be at risk. To continue its mission, Freegan Food Foundation is calling on local businesses, organizations, and individuals to step up as donors, volunteers, or partners. The loss of this sponsor also limits the foundation’s ability to receive matching funds and finalize its 2026 budget. “This is about more than just food,” Joost added. “It’s about restoring hope and building stronger communities.”
