What to Wear in St. Maarten: A Complete Clothing Guide, From Beachwear to “Caribbean Chic”
Packing for Beach Destination St. Maarten / St. Martin
If you are wondering what to pack, you are probably also considering what to wear while in St. Maarten.
St. Maarten is a popular holiday destination, and beach life is everywhere. This makes it a place where leisurewear is widely accepted. At the same time, St. Maarten is also home to a vibrant local community, so when moving between the beach and other public spaces, it is a good idea to cover up swimwear when entering stores, restaurants, and other public areas. This is especially useful when visiting areas along popular beaches such as Great Bay Beach and the Philipsburg Boardwalk, Kim Sha Beach, Simpson Bay Beach, and Maho Beach.
The same applies when leaving the pool or resort area.
During the Day
Overall, comfortable, lightweight clothing will serve you well. It allows you to transition easily from the beach to resort towns, as well as when or walking.
Last but not least, dressing lightly will help you adjust to the warm Caribbean climate. Thankfully, sunshine is the standard setting.
When It Rains
But sometimes, it rains too. Most of the time, rain comes in the form of short showers. A good solution is to keep a lightweight, foldable raincoat on hand if the sky looks cloudy.
If you are at the beach, there are many places where you can find some form of shelter, such as a beach club.
Evenings
There is no official dress code for restaurants, but casual attire is generally a good choice. Swimwear is best suited to the beach or pool, while a change of clothes can make the transition to dinner more comfortable.
The same goes for footwear. Flip-flops are perfectly suited to the beach, while some restaurants may call for slightly more polished footwear.
When you go out for a fine-dining experience in St. Maarten, you may want to celebrate the special occasion with something a little more elegant.
Consider “Caribbean Chic,” a regionally popular variation on evening and resort wear. There is no single definition, but a polished tropical style with Caribbean character — breezy fabrics and silhouettes, bold colors or prints, natural textures, and an elegant rather than beach-casual finish — would cover most interpretations. Vanity Fair has described “Caribbean Chic” as elevated resort wear, distinguishing it from stereotypical beachwear. It can include bright or neutral colors such as white and tan, lightweight linen fabrics, business-casual elements, and cocktail dresses for women.
Special Events
St. Maarten has special events with their own local traditions and styles of dress.
At the colorful Carnival parades, you will encounter elaborate costumes worn by the participating troupes, creating one of the island’s most vibrant celebrations.
Emancipation Day is celebrated with colorful historical outfits during a dedicated parade to the Emancipation Monument in Philipsburg.
On St. Martin’s Day, November 11, you will see flags representing both sides of the island proudly displayed, along with a traditional parade that alternates each year between the Dutch and French sides.
Clothing Optional
A special dress code applies to the southern part of Orient Bay Beach, a world-renowned clothing-optional beach. While the northern part is a regular, cosmopolitan stretch of coastline, the southern section is a nudist area well known within the clothing optional community.
When visiting other beaches, regular swimwear is the norm and covering up when leaving the beach helps make the transition to other public spaces comfortable.
Hiking
If hiking is part of your plans, do not forget to pack sturdy shoes. Hiking trails are often unpaved paths.
Popular hiking routes, such as the trail to the Natural Pool, and other remote locations do not necessarily have amenities nearby where you can cool off or get something to drink. It is therefore important to dress lightly and comfortably and to bring plenty of water to stay hydrated.
The same applies if you take a private excursion to the uninhabited island of Tintamarre.
What Not to Pack
You might already understand that, in most scenarios, a heavy jacket or sweater is going to take up suitcase space unnecessarily. The weather is rarely chilly, especially compared with the hot afternoons.
A light sweater can still be useful for cooler evenings or air-conditioned spaces, but otherwise, keep your packing light and dress for the Caribbean sun. A light sweater or jacket can still be useful for cooler evenings, boat trips, or strongly air-conditioned indoor spaces. Otherwise, think light, breathable clothing, comfortable footwear, swimwear, sun protection, and something light for an occasional rain shower.
Most importantly, pack for the Caribbean sun, the island’s outdoor lifestyle, and all the experiences St. Maarten has to offer.
