FREEDOM FIGHTER MONUMENT

Commemorating Abolition

 

The Freedom Fighter Monument is dedicated to those who fought for emancipation, liberation and freedom. Slavery was abolished on the Dutch Side in 1863, and is celebrated annually on Emancipation Day (1st of July). Every year for emancipation day there is a commemorative wreath-laying ceremony at this monument.

The Freedom Fighter Monument is in the Philipsburg area of St Maarten / St Martin. When coming by bus from the cruise port, you are prone to pass the monument by on the first roundabout you pass.

How to get to the Freedom Fighter Monument

How to get to the Freedom Fighter Monument from the direction of Oyster Bay/Orient Bay side of St Maarten / St Martin

 

Head towards the direction of the AC Wathey Cruise Port in Philipsburg. The Freedom Fighter monument roundabout is the first thing you will see when  heading towards Philipsburg. If you want to get a close look you can turn right towards Pondfill Road for parking lots.

How to get to the Freedom Fighter monument from the Simpson Bay/ Princess Juliana Airport SXM / Maho / Cupecoy / Marigot / Grand Case SFG / areas of St. Maarten / St. Martin

 

Pass Princess Juliana Airport from the Maho / Cupecoy direction or pass the Causeway Bridge coming from Marigot / Grand Case, towards Simpson Bay. While keeping the sea on your right-hand side and the Simpson Bay Lagoon on your left. Follow the main road to your left when it turns inland and you reach the Kruythoff roundabout. Take the second exit uphill and follow the road it for half a mile where you can enjoy the beautiful views. You will reach a roundabout on top of the hill. Skip the first and second exit, but take the third towards A.J.C. Brouwer Road. Follow this road until you reach the roundabout at Carrefour where you are going to take the second exit to Bush Road. Follow this main road and keep the Great Salt pond on your left. At the end of this road you will find The Freedom Fighter monument on the roundabout. It is possible to park your car along the main road.
