Taste, Ride and Dive Into St. Maarten Nature Day Plan

This fullday plan is designed for visitors who want to actively explore St. Maarten’s natural beauty both on land and underwater. Whether you’re a cruise passenger or a resort guest, this itinerary starts in the morning with a guided horseback trail, takes you to a legendary Caribbean lunch spot, and ends with a dive into reef life just off the coast of Philipsburg. It’s recommended you check the cruise ship schedule in advance, as the port can get busy, and booking tours early—especially in winter—is always advised.

Best Days to Do This Day Plan

Plan this day on Tuesday through Sunday when all components are fully operational and available (both Seaside Nature Park and Dive Sint Maarten operate daily with scheduled departures and openings that fit this timeline). Monday works as well, though some lunch service or schedules may vary slightly at local restaurants.

Morning: Horse Riding at Seaside Nature Park

Arrival and Preparation (8:30 AM—9:00 AM)

Begin your day by taking a short taxi ride from your hotel, boutique hotel, villa or the cruise terminal to Seaside Nature Park in Cay Bay. The park is open daily from about 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and welcomes riders of many levels. Checkin and meet your guide. You’ll be weighed and matched with a suitable horse, fitted with safety gear, and briefed on trail and beach riding safety.

Trail Ride Dip in the Caribbean (9:00 AM—10:30 AM)

At approximately 9:00 AM, ride out with your guide along trails winding through the park’s natural landscape. The route offers panoramic views of rugged coastline, native flora and fauna, with the unforgettable highlight being the beach segment where your ride will take you down to the Caribbean Sea for a refreshing dip with your horse. The horses are calm and suitable for beginners.

WrapUp and Photo Opportunities (10:30 AM—11:00 AM)

Postride, take a moment for photos and enjoy light refreshments before returning to Philipsburg for lunch. Allow for a taxi back that takes about 15–20 minutes.

Lunch: Farm to Table at Ital Shack

Lunch at Freedom Fighters Ital Shack (11:30 AM—12:45 PM)

Take a short taxi to Freedom Fighters Ital Shack, a local favorite serving fresh farm to table Caribbean vegetarian fare. This unique lunch spot grows much of its produce locally and has earned widespread acclaim—including praise from the late Anthony Bourdain for its authentic flavors and connection to island food culture.

Enjoy a hearty vegetarian or vegan lunch featuring curry, fresh salads, plantains, and local sides. This relaxed setting is a perfect way to fuel up before your dive, and its midday opening (typically around 8 AM–5 PM for lunch service) makes it an ideal stop on this itinerary. As it is a small shack – make sure you reserve a spot timely.

Afternoon: One Tank Dive With Dive Sint Maarten

Check In for Dive (1:15 PM—1:30 PM)

After lunch, take a bus in front of Ital Shack, walk (approximately 30 minutes) or take a short taxi to  Dive Sint Maarten at Bobby’s Marina in Philipsburg. Checkin for your one tank dive experience, which typically starts checkin around 1:30 PM and departs for a 2:00 PM dive.

Your dive guide will fit your gear, give a safety briefing, and prepare you for an immersive dive among St. Maarten’s reef environments. This onetank dive is ideal for certified divers or beginners looking to explore underwater life without committing to multiple dives, but is also wholly accessible to more experienced divers.

Dive Adventure (2:00 PM—3:30 PM)

Descend beneath the surface at a site near Great Bay, Little Bay reef or nearby shallow coral formations. Expect vibrant reef life, colorful fish, and perhaps intriguing invertebrates typical of Caribbean dive sites. Plan to be back at the dock by midafternoon, giving you time to stroll Philipsburg or head back to your ship or hotel. Estimated duration is about 60–90 minutes in the water plus preparation.

Practical Tips for Cruise and Stayover Visitors

  •  Cruise Ship Schedule: Always check the cruise ship arrival and departure times before planning this itinerary. Port crowds and transportation demand can peak during simultaneous ship calls. Booking tours in advance is strongly recommended, especially during winter high season

  •  Transport: All components are reachable from the Philipsburg cruise terminal or Emmaplein bus hub. The horseback ride location is best accessed by taxi or car rental due to its distance from bus stops.

  •  What to Bring: Sunscreen, hat, swimwear under clothes (for the beach component), certified dive card if needed, and comfortable shoes for walking between stops.
