SOUALIGA NEWSDAY: SUCCESS AT THE FIRST ANNUAL SXM LAGOON FESTIVAL

FIRST EDITION OF THE ANNUAL SXM LAGOON FESTIVAL

From March 23rd until March 26th, the first annual SXM Lagoon Festival took place at the Sint Maarten Yacht Club at Port de Plaisance, Palapa Marina, Skyport Marina and Isle De Sol Marina mostly in Simpson Bay. The event is considered a great success, influenced by the SMMTA, Department of Maritime Affairs, Department of Economy, Transport & Telecommunication of the TEATT and the Tourism Bureau.

The event opened at the Sint Maarten Yacht Club, with a head- to head chef competition. 3 local chefs and 4 yacht chefs got the opportunity to present their cuisine. St Maarten is considered the yachting capital of the Caribbean, so adding this event to the annual calendar hopefully revises into attracting more and more people to the island.

In the first round the chefs got a mystery box and had to make a dish out of the products given. In the second round the chefs had 60 minutes to make a dish with main ingredient Conch and Mango as a mystery ingredient. In round 3 the final contestants were to create a dish that represented their personality. Local chef Suzirea Adoptie had won the competition.

Because of the great success of the event, SMYC organized a afterparty at the marina, with a open bar, snacks, live entertainment and live music. Amongst the invited was honorable guest Haydn Hughes – Honorable Minister of Tourism, infrastructure, and Communication from Anguilla.

Looking back at the first edition of the SXM Lagoon festival, all went really well. Special thanks goes out to all the sponsors of the festival. Organizers also spoke about their excitement for next years edition.
