September Full Moon Paddle Brings Kayakers Into St. Maarten’s Lagoon

A Night on the Water Under the Harvest Moon

On September 26, kayakers in St. Maarten will have the opportunity to experience the island from the water during the monthly Full Moon Paddle. The event, open to beginners and experienced paddlers, starts at Kim Sha Beach and takes participants into Simpson Bay Lagoon for an evening beneath the rising Harvest Moon.

Organized as part of a series that runs from May through September, the paddle offers a different way to enjoy St. Maarten’s coastline. Participants gather at 6:15 PM in front of the Cocky Turtle at Kim Sha Beach, with the kayaking session scheduled to begin at 6:30 PM.

From Kim Sha Beach to the Lagoon

The evening begins with a short introduction to kayaking for those who are new to the activity. After the lesson, the group heads into the bay before passing beneath the Simpson Bay Bridge and continuing into the lagoon.

The route offers views of the yachts and the Causeway Bridge as the kayakers make their way across the water. The group will eventually stop near the mangroves, where participants can gather in a circle, enjoy a drink, and watch the moon rise behind the hills.

The combination of calm water, evening light, and the surrounding landscape makes the paddle an opportunity to experience a quieter side of the island.

A Full Moon Experience for All Levels

The Full Moon Paddle is open to all skill levels, including people who have never kayaked before. The introductory lesson is designed to help beginners get comfortable with the equipment before heading out onto the water.

The September event will take place under the Harvest Moon, the full moon associated with September. For those visiting St. Maarten during this period, the paddle provides an opportunity to spend an evening outdoors while exploring the island’s lagoon and coastline.

Why This Matters for St. Maarten

The Full Moon Paddle gives residents and visitors another way to experience St. Maarten beyond its busy beaches and daytime activities. By bringing people onto the water during a calm evening, the event highlights the island’s lagoon, mangroves, and coastal scenery. It also adds an outdoor activity to the island’s September calendar, offering something for both beginners and experienced kayakers.
