Sint Maarten Yacht Club Hosts the 7th Annual Domino’s Interschool Sailing Championship on Saturday May 25th

The Sint Maarten Yacht Club is thrilled to announce the 7th Annual “Domino’s Interschool Dinghy Sailing Championship” set to take place this Saturday May 25th, 2024. For this regatta skilled sailors form all schools on St. Maarten and St. Martin are invited to participate.

Thanks to the generous sponsorship from Domino’s Pizza, participation in the championship is completely free of charge for all competitors. They will also receive complimentary shirts and lunch sponsored by Domino’s.

“This championship stands out from typical sailing competitions. Instead of competing individually, sailors team up with their schoolmates to represent their schools in a team-based format,” said Elja van der Horst, Sailing Instructor at the Sint Maarten Yacht Club. “I’m excited to see the teamwork and camaraderie on the water, and I’m sure it will be a lot of fun for everyone involved.”

This year, 41 sailors from nine school are confirmed to participate including: Sister Regina Primary School, Learning Unlimited, CIA, Leonard Connor Primary School, All Children Educated Foundation, 7th Day Adventist Primary School, Victor Hugo, Milton Peters College and a Homeschooled team.

The competition will be divided into five classes: Optimist Class, Sail Qube Class, Laser Class, RS Zest class, and RS Quest Class. Schools will compete for the Overall Trophy for the best-performing school. A first, second and third place overall trophy will be awarded to the top three schools. Milton Peters College won the 2023 edition of the Domino’s Regatta. Let’s see if they can take home the first place again this year.

Individual trophies will also be awarded to the top three finishers in each class.

The main goal of this event is to promote sailing among the island’s youth, recognize the dedication and skill of student sailors, and introduce as many young students on St. Maarten to this exciting sport.
