The binational character of St. Maarten / St. Martin is nowhere more evident than in the Oyster Bay / Dawn Beach area. Home to one of the island’s four border crossings, with the border running through the namesake bay itself, the French (northern) side of the island is visible from the Dutch (southern) side of the area at all times, and vice versa. It is also the last section of the border to have been officially settled following the 1648 Concordia Treaty, with the final agreement reached in 2023. The latter made the formerly Dutch marina waters in the bay become French overnight.
