Construction Begins on New Airport Facility
Construction has begun on a new curbside check in facility at St. Maarten Airport, officially known as Princess Juliana International Airport. The project is designed to increase passenger processing capacity and give departing travelers another option for completing part of the check in process before entering the terminal.
The new facility is being built outside the main terminal and is expected to take approximately three to four months to complete, subject to normal construction conditions. Once operational, passengers will be able to check in and tag their luggage at the curbside facility before continuing into the terminal.
The development comes as St. Maarten Airport continues to respond to growing passenger and operational demands.
St. Maarten Airport adds another check in point
The new facility will move part of the departure process outside the existing terminal check in area. This will allow some passengers to complete their initial check in and baggage tagging before entering the main building.
For the airport, the additional processing point is intended to create more flexibility during the departure process. By spreading passenger activity across more than one location, the airport expects to reduce pressure on the existing check in area and improve the movement of travelers through the terminal.
The additional option could also be particularly useful for families traveling with luggage, older passengers and travelers who may benefit from easier access to check in services.
The airport expects the expanded setup to contribute to faster and more organized passenger processing, particularly as demand continues to increase.
Construction is already underway
Work on the new curbside check in facility is currently taking place in the designated area outside the terminal. Airport users may notice construction activity while the project is underway.
The expected construction period is approximately three to four months. St. Maarten Airport says it will take measures to minimize disruption to passenger movement and regular airport operations during the work.
Passengers and other airport users are therefore likely to encounter some changes around the construction area before the facility is completed.

More than 330 people are directly employed by the airport, while the wider airport community includes more than 1,700 people working for airlines, concessionaires and service providers.
Adding another passenger processing point gives the airport greater flexibility as it prepares for future demand. Rather than relying entirely on the existing terminal check in area, part of the departure process can eventually take place outside the main building.
The change is expected to be particularly noticeable during the check in stage of a passenger’s journey, when travelers will have the option of completing check in and baggage tagging before entering the terminal.
Construction is expected to continue for approximately three to four months before the new curbside check in facility is ready.
