7 Things to Know When Planning a Cruise to St. Maarten
Are you coming on a cruise to St. Maarten soon? You are likely to enjoy it—it is one of the most popular ports of call thanks to its many things to do in port and its proximity to Philipsburg and Great Bay Beach. Here are some tips to make your visit an even better one!

1. St. Maarten Is a Popular Cruise Port: Book Excursions Ahead of Time
St. Maarten is the most popular cruise port in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, measured by both passenger volumes and accolades, far exceeding Amsterdam in fellow Kingdom country the Netherlands. In addition, the island has a loyal following of resort, hotel and villa guests returning every year. Especially in wintertime, it is smart to check the cruise ship schedule and make reservations for things to do and shore excursion bookings well ahead of time if there are multiple ships in port. When this happens, the port may feel crowded for a short time—but note that people disperse shortly after arrival. Key activities for cruise passengers include a beach day at nearby Great Bay, shopping and visiting Philipsburg, or joining a shore excursion.

2. A Walkable Port: All Close By
There is no need to travel far when visiting the port of call, Philipsburg. In addition to being a great departure point for island tours, both the town and its two main beaches (see below) are within walking distance. You can reach Philipsburg with an easy 10-minute walk, although (ferry’s are available too). As the town is compact, its walkability also includes access to its museums, activities and shops.

3. Your Beach Port: Great Bay & Little Bay Beach
There are few ports of call with large, easily accessible beaches as close as those in Philipsburg. Great Bay beach is only a 10-minute walk from the port and offers dozens of beach clubs and eateries. Where you choose to lay down your towel will depend on your preferences. Famous beach clubs like Ocean Lounge and St. Rose Beach Bar are well-known spots along the lively east end—be sure to reserve in advance when multiple ships are in port. The further you walk down the boardwalk, the more the crowds thin out, and you will find tranquil beach bars such as Seaview, Big Bastards, Dutch Blonde Beach Bar, and The Pier. Here too, making a reservation ahead of time is always helpful.
Even quieter is Little Bay Beach, next to Fort Amsterdam, only a 10-minute taxi ride from the port and offering great views of your cruise ship. Beach chairs, water activities, and packages are available here as well.
4. Currency: US Dollars
If you are a US traveler, there is no need to exchange money. Although Caribbean Guilders (XCG) are the official currency, US dollars are by far the most commonly used bills and coins on the island.
5. No Need for Berlitz – English Is Common
A Dutch and French side may sound exotic; however, for centuries, English has been the island’s mother tongue. For most visitors, there is no need for linguistic preparation before making landfall.

6. Keep a Spot in Your Suitcase – Shopping!
The well-known shopping side of the port in St. Maarten adds some pre-holiday fun to your visit. Philipsburg is known as one of the Caribbean region’s key shopping towns, attracting dedicated shopping visits from islanders across the region. Many frequent visitors by cruise ship or airplane also choose Philipsburg to buy precious gems, souvenirs, or bathing suits. Chic Front Street is the most famous, but the daily-errand Back Street and Old Street in between are very well known too.

7. Plan Your Perks
St. Maarten already ranks as one of the more affordable Caribbean destinations, but for those planning ahead, there are always bargains to be found. For example, the Visit St Maarten VIP Pass is a free digital card offering dozens of destination discounts. You will find activities, restaurants, and retail items at reduced rates, along with additional perks. The monthly St Maarten Auction website offers a similar range of deals and turns advantageous offers into a small bidding game.
