Highest point of the Kingdom of the Netherlands
Here is an in-the-know suggestion for St. Maarten “island hoppers”. Mount Scenery is the highest mountain of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The dormant Saba volcano has extensive tropical rainforests on its 887 meter high slopes. Despite being under 900 meters, the volcano feels taller because it rises steeply from sea level. The summit is often covered in cloud forest, giving it a very lush, almost mystical atmosphere.
At the point Wouter and Annie van Kesteren made their way up the mountain however, they were lucky to experience the clearest of views – see their amazing picture above. The monument marking the summit experiences a beautiful day of blue skies and sunshine.
A few meters from this monument, on the caldera, you find another monument placed here. In 2010, when Saba became a Dutch municipality, the municipality with the highest point of the Netherlands until that date (Vaals) donated a plaque commemorating this moment of change.
If you are going up – do not forget to get your free “diploma” of reaching the summit at the tourism information store in Windwardside!
