Seaview Beach Hotel introduces Artist-in-Residence program
Philipsburg, Sint Maarten
Historic Seaview Beach Hotel Revitalizes Landmark Property with Art Program Led by Resident Artist Tes Verheij.
Resident artist Tes Verheij, who is staying at the hotel until June 2026, is helping lead a creative revival at the historic Seaview Beach Hotel, bringing new artistic energy to the landmark property overlooking Great Bay in Philipsburg.
Through Seaview’s Artist-in-Residence program, Verheij has helped transform several guest rooms using calming shades of blue inspired by the Caribbean Sea. The immersive designs reflect both the charm of theisland and the historic character of the property, which now celebrates more than 75 years of hospitality.
The artistic concept was inspired by a poem written by Seaview Director John Leone, now featured in the rooms: “Relax your soul in a thousand shades of blue that’s what the Seaview can do for you.” The poembecame the foundation for the room designs and colour palette developed by Verheij, blending art, hospitality, and the natural beauty of Great Bay into the guest experience.
Guests and visitors can also experience the arts through interactive Sip & Paint workshops led by resident artist Tes Verheij, who guides participants through creative sessions in a relaxed seaside setting. Through these events, Verheij brings guests directly into the artistic spirit of Seaview, transforming the hotel into a place where visitors can create their own island-inspired artwork while enjoying the beauty of Great Bay.
Verheij has also introduced a series of limited-edition ceramic tiles part of the Caribbean Blues collection blending classic ceramic Delft Blue artistry with Caribbean colours and motifs that reflect the island’screative spirit and the historic character of the Seaview property.
The artistic program is part of a broader revitalization of the hotel.
The Seaview Beach Hotel, the original hotel on St. Maarten dating back to 1947 and founded by the Hazel family, has welcomed generations of travellers seeking an authentic Caribbean stay along the Philipsburg Boardwalk. Recent upgrades to the complex now include a boardwalk market with a juice bar and coffee shop, an infinity pool and pool bar, beach cabanas, an entertainment courtyard, and the popular Double Dutch Koffiehuis on the Front Street side of the property. Director John Leone says the transformation reflects the hotel’s long-standing connection between hospitality and creativity.
“Art is part of the history of the hotel, and we are infusing culture and art into every piece of the commercial structure of Seaview. We have collaborated with local and international artists from every genre, and thisis only the beginning.”
The artistic transformation extends throughout the property through collaborations with several artists whose work now contributes to Seaview’s evolving visual identity. Highlights include the famous poolside cabana mural by Mash in Art, along with custom cabana designs by Jolie Duzon, Nica Labelle, and Tanisha Pitt. The revitalization also includes a collaborative alley restoration project with Colour Me SXM, bringingnew life and colour to the surrounding space.
Seaview also celebrates the island’s artistic heritage by offering artwork and merchandise by renowned St. Maarten artist Roland Richardson. Resident artist Tes Verheij also presents and sells original artwork andart-inspired merchandise on location, allowing visitors to take home pieces inspired by the colours, culture, and natural beauty of Sint Maarten.
With its 75+ year history, refreshed spaces, and growing artistic vision, Seaview Beach Hotel invites travellers, cruise visitors, and locals alike to rediscover one of Philipsburg’s most beloved seaside landmarks.
