On the eastern tip of Philipsburg, not far from the cruise port one finds the Sint Maarten Heritage Foundation & Museum. Cannons of the HMS Proselyte, a wreck that can still be dived to, welcome you to a compact and informative museum, learning about St. Maarten nature, people, history & monuments.
The museum has two floors. The entrance, museum shop, and one exhibition room are located on the lower floor. The main part of the museum is upstairs, where you will find an island stamp collection and a Wall of Fame honouring people who have contributed to the island, located alongside the staircase.
The museum is largely run by volunteers and offers free admission. However, it is customary to leave a few dollars in the donation box when you enter.
The upstairs section features exhibitions on the history, culture, and nature of St. Maarten / St. Martin.
The historical exhibits include artefacts and a model of the HMS Proselyte, a series of informative displays about the island’s forts, and an exhibition dedicated to the Jewish community of.
Throughout the main exhibition room, you will also find artefacts that offer a glimpse into everyday life on St. Maarten over the past century.
Sint Maarten Heritage Foundation & Museum is located in between the Boardwalk and the Front Street, walk away from the cruise port, in Philipsburg.
