SAGE FLOWER

Sage Flower – National Flower of St Maarten / St Martin

The Sage Flower is the national emblematic flower of St. Maarten. More specifically, it is the yellow-orange West Indian Sage (Lantana camara).

The flower is a hardy, sun-loving tropical species. It produces tight, rounded clusters of small golden-yellow and orange blooms and can grow into large, dense bushes up to two meters wide. It is also highly effective for erosion control and natural hedging.

The flower is featured in the upper-left corner of the national emblem, which is itself positioned on the left side of the national St. Maarten flag. Its significance aligns with the national motto, “Semper Pro Grediens,” meaning “Always Going Forward,” as the flower symbolizes:

• Resilience & Adaptability: Because this plant thrives in intense heat, poor soil, and challenging coastal conditions, it represents the ability to overcome adversity.

• Transformation: Lantana blossoms are known for changing colors as they mature. Because of this unique characteristic, they symbolize personal growth, life transitions, and the graceful navigation of change.

Beyond its presence in the national emblem and flag, the Sage Flower is also prominently featured in the logo of the St. Maarten Hospitality & Trade Association (SHTA), whose many members are likely to be among your hosts during your holidays.
