The Azure Hotel was built by Reinier Oswald van Delden, who served as the Lieutenant Governor (Gezaghebber) of the Windward Islands from 1969 to 1975. It changed hands a few times and then became the Morning Glory Guesthouse under the proprietorship of Lucy Baker, an author and artist from California.
After hurricane Luis in the 1990s, the property fell to disrepair and was abandoned for eight years. Ironically, during this time, it was called the Hotel California. A few attempts were made to rehabilitate the property before Fawnette and Michael acquired it and began renovations. Rather than demolish the building, they decided to preserve its original, old St. Maarten charm.
They decided to reduce the amount of guest rooms from 24 to 8. Part of the building was removed to make way for the courtyard. All of the stones that were used were hand picked from a beach that was being cleared to make way for the Indigo Bay development. The islands geological history is recorded in the stones. The result is a miniature habitat where birds, crabs, lizards, and tortoises make their home.
Michael and Fawnette are artists that owned and operated their own gallery in Atlanta, Georgia for some years before moving to St Maarten. Their studio, where they create their art, is now situated on the beach. Paintings and prints are available for purchase. Over the years, this stretch of Simpson Bay has gone from sleepy fishing village to a luxurious riviera, although some remnants of the old days remain, like the Azure. The beach in front of the Azure is prized as one of the best on the island. During the winter months, the Bay is filled with some of the worlds most beautiful yachts.
